About Studying
At Univeristy students can choose to take one subject, or a joint honours (two subjects) and students will complete 3-4 years of your Degree depending on their subject. The age of students can be diverse, not like high school/secondary school, so you can have your character be any age you wish. Although it is common for students to take their A-Levels and then go straight to University, many take gap years or go to University years later. Basically University is a choice and as long as you have the requirements for your course you can go to University whenever you are ready.
There are so many different subjects available at University, and each one requires different requirements. For example; to study a Fine Art degree, most Universities will require a A-Levels and a Foundation Course taken at an Art College.
To see what subjects are available to study at the University please see this list.
Subjects, Degrees & Modules
Depending on the subject, students studying an undergraduate degree will have compulsary modules in the first year. The second year will have some compulsary modules and some choice, and then the third and fourth year will have even more choice. Each student has to take a certain amount of credits per term per year. Each module is a certain amount of credits. In the final years of a BA degree a student usually has to complete a dissertation or thesis.
It is possible to study modules outside of your home department. There is usually an option in each year for a student to take an 'elective' module. Electives are basically modules in a different subject, which means characters from different subjects will be able to interact academically if they are taking the same module.
After completing a degree, a student can then apply for a Master's degree. There is then the possibility of studying for a PH.D.. To learn more about Degree classifications and Master's degree please see here. Students studying a degree below a Master's degree are referred to as 'Undergraduates', and those studying a Master's and above are 'Postgraduates'.
